Nicolò Filippo Rosso | Exodus (Chapter 2): Ten of Thousands Flee Central America

Synopsis

PhotoDOC is a photo documentary project with an original format: short films based on the collaboration between a filmmaker and a photographer. For the three films in the EXODUS: Mass Migration and its Ripple Effect in the Americas, Italian photographer Nicolò Filippo Rosso talks to Spanish producer/director Jose Muniain about the work he has carried out over the past four years, traveling along the migratory routes that cross the American continent to document the distress and violence surrounding the exodus of the peoples of Latin America.

This second chapter, Ten Thousands Flee Central America, looks at the disastrous consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, followed by hurricanes Eta and Iota, which ravaged Central America, driving tens of thousands of people to migrate to the United States via Guatemala and Mexico.

What you will find in this film

Latin America's migratory flows through the lens • photographs told by their author • black & white documentary photography • a long-term photographic project • a series that won the World Press Photo Award and the W Eugene Smith Award

I don't think when I take a photo. I try to take the best one I can and connect with the people I meet, so that these encounters can lead me to understand their condition.
When I observe the chaos of certain situations, I try to order it by observing it through the rectangle of my lens. I try to bring order to something that apparently has none. This triggers deeper reflections in the viewer.
