Negar Yaghmaian | Iran No Filter #04

Synopsis

Smartphones and social networks have given rise to a new generation of photographers in Iran, who are showing us a daily life that is usually inaccessible to outsiders. Ten of them tell us about the young people they immortalise and to whom they belong. Young people trying to find their place in a paradoxical society, between coercive tradition and liberating Western influence.

Based on her own experience, Negar Yaghmaian decided to document the daily lives of Iranian women who have chosen to live alone in a country where single women are perceived as immoral. She talks to us about this series in this new episode.

What you will find in this film

Iranian society in the throes of change • Iranian youth seen from the inside • a new generation in search of independence • the power of social networks • Western culture as an outlet

For this series, I really wanted us to see their faces. They show that they take responsibility for their choice, by looking straight at the camera. If people can recognise them, they don't mind.
The new generation, especially the girls, have a more open outlook on life. We all have one thing in common, which has nothing to do with our beliefs or our origins, it's our desire to fight against the norms of our society.
