Synopsis

What's left when all the wood has been cut, all the coal has been mined, all the oil has been extracted? The once coveted lands are simply abandoned. But in the ruins of industrialisation, a new world emerges. The non-human takes hold of the remains and transforms them into something intriguing, frightening and, above all, fascinating.

For Les Nuits Photo 2023, Alexe Liebert, the festival's artistic director, offered us a selection of photographic films from previous editions. She explains her choice of this fascinating film made from 1432 cyanotypes exposed under the Saint-Etienne sun...

"Archives have become a fundamental material in our contemporary search for memory. Here, the artist Cendre goes beyond a simple repossession and allows his subject - the slagheaps of Saint-Étienne - to act on its own on this residual material, the cinematic memory of this land, transforming and metamorphosing it. The "coup de coeur" of the 2022 edition of our festival, LES RUINES DE CE RÊVE, a photographic animation in cyanotype, belongs to the category of impossible projects that fortunately exist."
