Born in South Africa, Pieter Hugo resides and crafts his art in Cape Town, having honed his photographic skills as a self-taught artist. Deeply rooted in his homeland and the broader South African continent, Hugo traverses its vast landscapes, capturing the dynamism of a modernizing Africa. He is renowned for his evocative portraits of marginalized communities and his poignant documentation of the continent's historical imprints.

His groundbreaking series, "The Hyena Men," catapulted him to international acclaim, earning him the Discovery Award at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2008. Since then, Hugo's photographic endeavors have been showcased in esteemed institutions such as the Berardo Museum, The Hague Museum of Photography, the Musée de l'Elysée, Fotografiska, and the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane, among others.

Furthermore, Hugo's contributions have graced numerous group exhibitions at prestigious venues like the Rijksmuseum, Tate Modern, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, and Huis Marseille, solidifying his stature in the global photographic arena.
